Postock

August 2nd - 4th

Postock is a small music and arts festival in Wisconsin.  This year I had the pleasure of installing some of my new work on one of the stages.  I always have such a great time attending this festival, and was honored to be a part of the making this year!

ChaNorth Summer Residency

June 4 - July 1, 2018

During this month-long residency, I explored fragile structures, systems, and environments by using materials that weaken one another, simultaneously untangling and tangling systems, and adding weight to already fragile structures.  These pieces, like my work in "Making and Mindfulness", still deal with the larger concept of trauma and memory, just with a shifted focus.

Barn Gallery Fundraiser

May 18, 2018

Hosted by The Food Literacy Project of Louisville, this benefit art show displayed work that loosely dealt with the topic of food, farming, and land. The images I created for this show were made by taking materials that would have been thrown away, and using them as drawing utensils.  Two of the pieces are actually multiple drawings layered on top of one another to create one image.

Making & Mindfulness

April 3 - April 7, 2016

The work presented in Making & Mindfulness documents the process of recovery from trauma through the process of making art.  Being engaged in simple and repetitive tasks such as knitting and making hundreds of repetitive crosshatched marks on paper allows the maker to settle into a state of “mindless mindfulness.” In this state the hands are physically productive while the mind is allowed to wander, uninterrupted by anxiety or overstimulation. These pieces act as documents of time, mindset, nature of material, and labor, while portraying motifs such as transformation, progress, and control. Just as the process of making this work required reflection, it also has the potential to prompt reflection when viewed.

This is Not About You

May 3, 2015

Throughout history, the female body has been given value on how it looks and how it behaves.  We as a society objectify the naked female body and use it to sell products and ideas, yet when real women expose too much, they are scrutinized.   Our bodies’ values are set to standards dictated by advertising agencies, families, doctors, friends, partners, etc.  With the prevalence of sexual violence against women, where perpetrators see the body as something existing for their own satisfaction, the question must be asked – who owns the female body?
The act of mold making was crucial with this project for two reasons: one, viewing a mold’s positive, reminds us that an original, or owner, exists.  The second reason being that taking a mold of the breast is an intimate process.  The volunteers and I quickly got past the awkwardness, and formed a new level of trust.  These topics are extremely hard to discuss, and the women that participated are incredibly brave people.
This project reminds us all that behind these bodies lay the real owner – the women themselves.  Through discussing issues of body ownership and gender inequality, these women and I got to connect through shared experiences, through moments of pain, and times of empowerment.  My most basic hope is that upon reading the volunteers’ statements and seeing these powerful busts, the viewer understands why women are the only ones that should be entitled to their bodies, and how other’s claims of ownership affect each and every woman.

work can be purchased through findyourpiece.net

Piece. was made to bring quality, one-of-a-kind art to first time and experienced buyers at a fair price.  Too often artists are put in the tough position of signing onto financially detrimental contracts just so they can gain exposure and sell their work, while first time buyers are put off by high gallery prices.

Piece.'s goal is to bring a curated selection of visual art from a range of emerging to experienced artists at a fair and transparent price.
